The sun provides a tan, a good mood and stimulates the production of vitamin D. But nobody is automatically protected against the harmful UV radiation of the sun. So always use an anti-sunscreen product. Chemist Cristina gives advice about the factor.
Advertorial
SPF
Cristina: The protection factor of sunscreen products is indicated by the abbreviation SPF (Sun Protection Factor). A light-skinned person needs a higher factor than a dark-skinned person. Depending on the skin type, I recommend a certain SPF, so especially ask for this at the drugstore where you buy the product. For babies and small children I always recommend SPF 50, because with their fragile skin you should not take any risks. But also people with red hair or light skin and older people can best use a high factor.
Products
Anti-sunscreen products come in all shapes and sizes:creams, lotion, stick, spray, oil and so on. Sticks are usually used for sensitive parts of the body, such as nose, ears, lips and have a high SPF. Oil has a lower protection factor. Apply half an hour in advance, because the cream needs time to penetrate well into the skin. Repeat the application every 2 hours, or more often if you are sweating heavily or after swimming and toweling. Do not store a product for longer than 1 to 2 years, because after that it will not work as well.
Holiday
When you go on holiday to a warm country, you have to take extra care of your skin. I also always tell clients to wear a hat or cap if they are out in the sun a lot, your scalp is also very sensitive to the sun. When you also use products against insect bites (such as products with DEET), it is important to first apply the anti-sunscreen and only about an hour later the insect product.
Myths
Many customers say they want to use a lower factor because they think they won't tan otherwise. That's bullshit! Even with a high factor, the skin turns brown, but you have more protection against harmful UV radiation. Moreover, you will stay beautifully tanned for longer if you apply the skin well.'
