With the exhibition 'Jewelry – makers &wearers', Museum Volkenkunde presents the largest collection of jewelery ever in a Dutch museum. Nearly 1000 pieces of jewelry from the museum collection, supplemented with contemporary jewelry from leading designers from all over the world, guarantee plenty of viewing pleasure, amazement and admiration. In addition to 'how people decorate themselves worldwide', the exhibition also zooms in fully on the makers, making techniques and the special stories of the wearers. The exhibition will take place from December 13, 2017 to June 3, 2018 in Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden.
Jewelry makes people more beautiful and often has a meaning. What we consider less often are the jewelry makers and the techniques that these makers use. This exhibition changes that. The exhibition is therefore an ode to the jewelery makers. Age-old techniques tell a story about culture, history and identity. On the basis of the most beautiful jewelery from the collection of the Museum of Ethnology, the Africa Museum and the Tropenmuseum; from refined gold work from Asia and South America, jewelry made from the most diverse natural materials from Oceania and silver from North America and the Middle East to beadwork from Africa.
