On October 6, 2017, the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam will open the Fashion Cities Africa exhibition. In Fashion Cities Africa, you see the urban fashion scenes from the perspective of local designers, stylists, shopkeepers, photographers and bloggers. Brother and sister 2ManySiblings take you to the market in Nairobi, where they buy second-hand designer clothes to restyle. The exhibition also includes creations by The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) and the fashion label Maki Oh (Lagos), which is worn by, among others, Beyoncé and Michelle Obama.
Fashion is hot in Africa, but the African fashion does not exist:there are various thriving fashion scenes in different cities. From streetwear to couture and from experimental to more subdued. Carriers, makers and connoisseurs use it to show their identity, personal taste and background. Often linked to the city in which they live. The city that holds up a mirror to them. Fashion Cities Africa showcases the diversity of fashion in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi – full of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. In the exhibition you will find creations by, among others, The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) and the fashion label Maki Oh (Lagos), which is worn by, among others, Beyoncé and Michelle Obama.
