Almost 65 percent of Dutch people between the ages of 20 and 50 do not check their skin often enough for suspicious spots. In addition, more than 1 or 5 have no idea what to look for during a skin check.
The above facts emerged from research by the Melanoma Foundation. Yesterday the campaign #checkyourself started. Detecting melanoma early is very important.
Fables about melanoma
- More than a quarter (27%) of those surveyed think – wrongly – that the use of aftersun after sun exposure reduces the chances of melanoma.
- Almost half of people have no idea that melanoma is in the top 3 of cancer types most common among young people.
- Almost 40% of those surveyed cannot answer the question whether a melanoma always starts as a mole. That is not the case.
- 31% of the Dutch do not know that skin cancer is the fastest growing form of cancer worldwide.
