Have you always wanted to put yourself in the shoes of a designer? It will soon be possible in the TextielMuseum in Tilburg. Or yes, shoes – socks actually. Because from September 26, 2020 you can have your own personalized designer socks and scarves knitted on the new state-of-the-art knitting machine. With this, the TextielMuseum offers visitors the opportunity to get started in the TextielLab:the fully equipped development center where many well-known designers are at home.
For the kick-off of this new activity, which bears the name Design Studio, the museum is collaborating with Dutch product designer Bertjan Pot. Together with the TextielMuseum, he developed a digital application that allows visitors to the museum to design their own items with the central theme of 'color'. A creative process that is also completely Corona proof.
The Design Studio will have a permanent place in the museum and will consist of three different rooms. Each room deals with a different phase of the design process:inspiration, design and production. In the first room you explore the world of top designer Bertjan Pot, who invites you to get started with a set of design principles. You then determine your design in the design space by playing with colors.
You translate your ideas into a digital design on one of the workstations. This design is sent to the knitting machine, which knits a complete pair of socks live. Including your own devised text on it. A unique experience to be right on top of this. You will receive your socks packed and taken home straight away. Or a scarf – which will be sent to you – because you can also have it knitted at the Design Studio. Both a perfect gift to yourself or someone else.
Now even more relevant than ever, the Design Studio has its sights set on the future of fashion:fashion on demand, local production without residual waste and the use of sustainable yarns. In short:no overproduction and really sustainable.
