Some people rave about cleansing their skin with oil, others don't like it. How exactly does it work and is it worth a try?
The Oil Cleansing Method, as it is called, is popular with people with different skin types. This method of cleansing is even used for oily or acne-prone skin. It differs per skin type which oil is good.
Your skin and oil
Our skin produces sebum, a protective oil layer that protects the skin and keeps it supple. Some cleaning products are too aggressive and forcibly remove too much sebum from your skin. Your skin will therefore produce extra sebum to protect itself, so it has the opposite effect. Using oil as a cleanser would leave just enough sebum on your face.
Which oil do you use?
The website of The Oil Cleansing Method recommends the following oils for different skin types:
Oily skin: 30% castor oil, 70% sunflower oil
Normal skin/combination skin: 20% castor oil, 80% sunflower oil
Dry skin: 10% castor oil, 90% sunflower oil
These are just guidelines and there are dozens of different oils on the market. So you can mix until you have found your perfect cleanser.
How does it work?
Drip a little oil on your hands and massage it over your face. Then press a warm washcloth on your face and remove the oil. It is also handy that you can immediately remove your eye make-up with the oil.
Does it work?
Whether something works differs per skin. If it appeals to you, it's worth a try.
