Halloween face paint; 5 Tips for Horrifying Faces and Making Fake Blood!

On October 31, the streets will be taken over by zombies, vampires, witches, devils, skeletons and other scary creatures. Fake blood comes from carefully made-up wounds, and when your doorbell rings, I'd make sure you have a treat ready ("trick-or-treat!"). Halloween, the horror festival that has blown over from America, is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. Even in our village there are streets and neighborhoods that participate in Halloween. Of which the children go door-to-door with Halloween make-up on their faces. To find suitable Halloween clothing, you only have to take one thing into account:as long as it is scary or gruesome. Especially for you I went looking for examples and tips for painting children for Halloween. Includes a recipe for fake blood! Horrible but….

Face painting tips from the professional

Before you start painting, it is useful to read these tips:

  • Use professional Halloween face paint. This works more pleasantly than the cheapest junk and is often better for the skin. Also use good sponges and brushes, because good material is half the battle.
  • Work from light to dark with Halloween makeup
  • Create your own version of an example. This prevents disappointment for you and your child. In short, improvise!

Tip:You can find super nice Halloween face paint here. And also cool Halloween clothing and accessories (from bracelets to cups or a cool cut set).

Halloween make-up examples for a successful Halloween outfit

Tip 1:Zombie:Child from 'The Walking Dead'

The face is often made white, with the eyes being rimmed dark gray or black. The cheekbones can also be given a hint of gray, so that they are extra accentuated. For the finishing touch some blood at the mouth and/or neck and voila, your living dead person can make the street unsafe! Oh and as far as clothing is concerned:nice and dirty and torn of course 😉 .

Tip 2:A sweet witch or a horror witch?

You can paint your daughter as a sweet witch or as a horrible witch. Discuss what she wants with her, because the basis of the make-up is slightly different in both variants. For the horror witch, use a white undercoat, gray cheekbones and slightly accentuated eyes as a base. For example, think of black eye pencil. A sweet witch lacks the sharp contrast between dark and light in the eyes and cheekbones.

Choose whether you want the whole face colored with Halloween make-up or just draw individual elements on her face, such as a spider web and spiders. I also think the green witch is a very nice variant.

Tip 3:Vampires:Bloodthirsty Creatures

The most important thing to pay attention to when painting your little vampire is of course the teeth. Although you could also use fake teeth for that. In addition, you draw firm, thick eyebrows and a trace of blood may be visible at the mouth. Do you want it even more extensive? Then use the zombie face as a base and supplement it with scary vampire teeth. Let's hope you have enough garlic at home 😉 .

Tip 4:the Devil

Red is not only the color of love, but also of this devil. For Halloween, paint the face red and give it black, angled, eyebrows. Darken the mouth with black. Optionally, you can mix this black with red. Of course, a devil has horns. Do you have loose horns with the costume? Then you don't have to do anything. Otherwise you can paint with white horns on the forehead. Do this before applying the red all over your face. A devil with pink horns is not really a deterrent.

Tip 5:a skeleton

Make the face including the lips white and leave the eyes free. Make a black border around the eyes, after which you fill the area. Accentuate the cheekbones with gray. Now it's the mouth's turn. Draw the edges of the mouth with black and extend it all the way to the middle of the cheeks. Then draw the lines of the teeth in this 'mouth' with black. And voila, the walking bone parade is ready.

Tip:Dress your child in a skeleton costume with bones.

Horrible wounds:what happened?!

Would you rather not dress up your child or do you not have any costumes available? Then think about making gruesome wounds. Success guaranteed! You can make a severed finger or cuts in no time with bread dough and fake blood. Bread dough I hear you say? On this site you will find a clear tutorial on how to make these kinds of wounds.

Tip:Also consider a bullet wound between the eyes 🙂 .

A recipe to make fake blood

Finally, a recipe for fake blood. You can buy fake blood at the party store, but you can also make it yourself. I can tell you:the kids were super excited to start making fake blood with me. It's easy, fast and cheap. You will need:water, flour/flour, red food coloring (I used the food coloring to make marzipan cakes) and ground coffee (I used a little instant coffee).

Preparation of fake blood:

  • Boil water in a pan
  • Add a little sifted flour/flour to this
  • Add the red food coloring and mix everything well with a whisk
  • Let this cook for a while, so that it thickens a bit
  • Add a little ground coffee and let it dissolve well

The amount of coffee you use depends on what kind of blood you want. Coffee makes the red slightly browner. Fresh blood is redder in color than old blood. You want old, dried blood? So add more coffee to the mixture. It's that simple and you can easily make your own Halloween face paint 😉 .

Tip:To get in the mood, you can also pimp your house with nice accessories. From stickers to cobwebs and from pumpkins to bats, you can find it all online 😉 . Have fun!
