Most people still prefer the dentist. But the people who go to the dental hygienist often keep coming back because of the satisfied result.
The dentist is known to everyone, but only 37 percent of the population (without dentures) says they have experience with a dental hygienist †
People who go to the dental hygienist have a smaller preference for the dentist. Especially for removal of tartar and dental plaque and periodic check-ups, they consider the dental hygienist a good alternative. This is apparent from research within the NIVEL Consumer Panel on Healthcare among more than 3,000 people aged 18 and older.
Cared for teeth
Because the Dutch population nowadays attaches more value to well-groomed and healthy teeth , and as a result often retain their own teeth until a later age, the demand for oral care increased.
NIVEL researcher Johan Hansen hopes that dentists and dental hygienists will settle more together in one location , in order to promote cooperation and coordination of tasks between the professional groups in oral care.
