A common question estheticians get in their day-to-day work is the difference between permanent makeup and microblading. This is understandable, because microblading is one of the latest developments in decorative cosmetics. The treatment originally came from Asia and has taken the world by storm in recent years. Permanent makeup, on the other hand, has long been established and part of the conventional range of many cosmetic studios. So what does the new method entail and what are the differences between permanent makeup and microblading?
Permanent makeup
Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing that is also known by the technical terms micropigmentation and dermapigmentation. Using tattoo techniques, designs and contours are incorporated into the skin that visually correspond to the desired makeup. Usually parts of the face such as the eyebrows, eyelids and lips are treated. The result is aesthetically accentuated facial features that no longer require daily makeup. An effect achieved by pigmenting the top layers of the skin with a pigmentation device and special colors. Depending on the color quality and treatment method, permanent make-up can last for years, but will fade over time and must be renewed. Permanent make-up is also used for medical pigmentation, for example for breast pigmentation. Great results can be achieved with permanent makeup, but the method can reach its limits when it comes to fine-tuning – especially in the eyebrow area.
Microblading
Microblading is a subcategory of permanent makeup and is used in the eyebrow area. Instead of a pigmentation device, so-called blades, small needles in a row, are used to draw fine hairs. The treatment is performed manually – without the use of machines. After the desired eyebrow shape has been worked in with the blades, the pigment color is massaged into the microscopic skin openings. The result is very fine and detailed hairs that give the eyebrow a natural and full look. At the same time, the skin does not penetrate as deeply as with permanent make-up. This can create a 3D effect and make the hairs look much sharper.
Basically, microblading and permanent makeup differ in terms of application and the tools used. While microblading is used in the cosmetic treatment of the eyebrows, permanent makeup is also used on other areas of the skin.
