If you have naturally curly hair, you are probably well aware that sometimes it takes a series of hair styling products and tools to go from curly to straight. And you also know that styling locks isn't as easy as blow-drying your locks quickly. But how do you know if you're doing it right? Read on to learn how to style curly hair the right way.
How to style curly hair?
As beautiful as your naturally curly locks are, we understand that sometimes you just want a sleek, straight look. But before you reach for your straightener, take a moment to brush up on the basics of straightening curly hair. Here's what to do:
Wash your hair
First of all, you should wash your hair. Since curly hair tends to get frizzy, use a frizz-control shampoo and conditioner. Use lukewarm water to wash your locks, as hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils, which will only worsen frizz. After shampooing, use only a small amount of conditioner on the lengths and ends of your hair. After the shower, dry your hair with a microfibre cloth or a t-shirt, both will be softer on strands than a cotton towel.
Prepare your strands
Before you pick up your blow dryer, prep your damp strands with a heat protectant spray. Heat can damage all types of hair, so it's crucial to use a heat protectant beforehand, regardless of your hair type. Section your hair and spray and brush to ensure it is evenly distributed.
Blow dry
Now that your hair is prepped and protected, you're ready to blow-dry. Grab your blow dryer and your round brush and get to work. To make it easier, part your hair with a few clips and focus on drying a small section at a time. Keep your blow dryer on the medium or warm heat and make sure your strands are completely dry before moving on to the next step.
Get your hair straightener
Once all your hair is dry, clip it into a half-up, half-down hairstyle. With your flat iron, go over small sections of hair. Using small sections will only allow you to straighten your strands in one or two passes. Use the lowest setting of the straightener, this will also get the job done. Once the bottom half of your hair is smooth, let the top half down and follow the same process. The goal here is to make everything smooth. We know it seems like a lot of steps, but blow drying before styling is absolutely crucial to keeping your hair healthy. Never try to use a flat iron on wet or even damp hair. It can cause quite a bit of damage to your strands, and it just won't work!
Finish with hairspray
Using too much will make your hair heavier, so we recommend limiting the hair product you use to a few spritzs of a strong hairspray. This will keep your styled strands in place without looking greasy or heavy. Shake the can before using, then spray on your hair and hold it about 1 foot away from your head.
