A new season is just around the corner and nothing is more fun than swapping out your warm winter clothes for breezy, lightweight items. So now is the perfect time to clear out your closet, which can be harder than it sounds. To do this right, here are seven key steps that will make the whole process easier and more bearable.
1. Invest in good clothes hangers
Before you start, buy good quality hangers that are thin but durable, such as velvet options. These immediately increase the amount of space in your closet and keep your clothes in good condition. It is a worthwhile investment. Make sure you use the same type for all your clothes.
2. Clear out the wardrobe
Clean up your wardrobe by collecting everything you haven't worn or just don't like in the past six months, then throw it away, sell it or donate it to charity. Discard items that are no longer wearable, sell items that are still in fashion and in good condition, and donate items that are no longer trendy or value for money.
3. Prioritize your garments
Now it's time to adjust your closet for the new season. Move your lightweight pieces – along with recent spring trend buys to the front while moving winter clothes to the back. Also keep transitional pieces like thin knits and cardigans in the front for easy access.
4. Choose a system
From there, choose an effective arrangement that works for you, whether everything needs to be coordinated by color or garment type. To create more space, fold sweaters, t-shirts and denim. And the rest? Hang it up.
5. Get creative with storage
Accessories can take up a lot of space. Think of new ways to organize and store your shoes, bags, scarves and hats so they don't create a mess. Store them in bags or boxes with labels or photos so you can quickly identify them and grab them whenever you want.
6. Clean
With all those items, cabinets and drawers get dirty and dusty. Wipe any surface and make sure to disinfect it!
7. Don't tackle everything at once
Instead of thinking of spring cleaning as a chore to complete in a hurry, choose to take your time. Break this organizational project into individual challenges, either lasting a few days or weeks to avoid getting overwhelmed. Do it on a weekend or whenever you have free time, with music playing in the background – and maybe a glass of wine in hand – to make it fun.
